Choral Music by Brahms, Holst and Britten

An ensemble of women choristers from the Chorus of the “Asociación de Amigos del Teatro de la Maestranza” under their leader Íñigo Sampil performs Brahms, Holst and Britten in the first series of its type in the history of the theatre. The men’s ensemble will follow in April 2019. In this way, the Teatro de la Maestranza recognises the excellence of the chorus, along with a growing interest in the music community, who applaud these singers during the opera season.  The repertory of choral music - of which Brahms, Holst and Britten were true masters, - is replete with masterpieces to be heard in this series. The brilliant Bulgarin with Spanish nationality harpist ·Daniela Iolkicheva accompanies, she has been the soloist of the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra since its foundation in 1991.

The chorus (“Coro de la Asociación de Amigos del Teatro de la Maestranza”) was created in June 1995 to take part in the opera season and other lyrical programmes of the theatre. Over the course of its 25 years, the chorus has become a cornerstone, gaining prestige and acclaim from both the audience and critics. The group comprises some hundred men and women, the number varies depending on the repertory; around 30 have been members since its first days. Aside from collaborating with the theatre, the chorus works closely with the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra “Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla” (ROSS), in those seasons’ programmes which include choral music. The chorus has also teamed with the Sinfónica de Galicia, Ciudad de Granada, Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla, Filarmónica de Málaga and the Metropolitana of Lisbon. The chorus has performed in the Auditorio Nacional and Teatro Real of Madrid and the Palau de la Música in Valencia.

Íñigo Sampil (Blibao) has been Chorus Master since the 2010- 2011 season.  He has trained with maestros such as Boris Dujin, Brian O’Connell or Simon Carrington, a founding member of The King’s Singers.
