Vivaldi and Haendel, splendours of expectation

A high-powered meeting of Baroque music. Accompanied by the Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla (OBS), a guarantee of instrumental excellence and deep-felt expression, and led by concert master Andoni Mercero, Argentine soprano Veronica Cangeni and Spanish countertenor Carlos Mena, two acclaimed voices of the Baroque universe, come together for a programme of Vivaldi and Haendel. The title of their recital, “A Beautiful Ray of Hope” invites us to take pleasure in, undoubtedly, a lovely evening.  To be sure, it will be an injection of energy, delicacy and Baroque virtuosity.

Veronica Cangemi (Mendoza, 1964) began her studies initially as a cellist; she was a member of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Mendoza. Later, and after winning the singing competition “Francisco Viñas” of Barcelona, she broadened her education with Heather Harper and her international career took off. In Baroque music, she has collaborated with maestros such as Harnoncourt, Christie, Minkovski, Koopman, Malgoire, Gardiner, Biondi…, as well as with Claudio Abbado or Zubin Mehta. Cangeni, a name on the international stage, is a soprano endowed with a powerful stage presence, having centred her career on Mozart, Gluck and Baroque composers. “It is very delicate and requires a masterly specialization” she has said. With reference to Vivaldi, in particular, she states “(his music) is very accessible and he is one of the best composers to introduce an audience into the world of opera”.

For his part, Carlos Mena (Vitoria, 1971), received his training with the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis of Basel under Richard Levitt and René Jacobs. Mena is one of the best contratenors of his generation: although he is fundamentally known for his formidable work in Baroque scores -interpreting the operas of Haendel in Salzburg, Vienna, Amsterdam or Berlin- in fact, his repertory includes considerable contemporary music -Sánchez Verdú or Erkoreka- and he has sung the music of Britten at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. He shaped his career for 10 years in the Capella Reial of Jordi Savall, and he also is a conductor. Regarding his musical adaptability, he has said “Although there are risks to this, I do not like to box myself in. One must move those muscles situated in the brain, not just the vocal ones”.

Conductor and concert master Andoni Mercero (San Sebastián) began his studies of violin and viola in his native city of San Sebastian and completed his education in Madrid, Toronto, Berlin and Amsterdam.  Having won various competitions -Vittorio Gui, Bonporti…- he has been a Guest concertmaster with different orchestras, Baroque or otherwise, and collaborates frequently with other groups such as Cafe Zimmermann or Il Complesso Barocco.  Often, he is the concertmaster of the Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla, Al Ayre Español and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi.
