Púrpura for the Baroque Orchestra of Seville
The Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla (OBS), always applauded in the Teatro de la Maestranza, is more present than ever this season. Conducted by concertmaster Stefano Barneschi, a brilliant violinist associated with the Il Giardino Armonico, the orchestra plays a programme of Georg Philipp Telemann and Johann Bernhard Bach with the participation of soprano Nuria Rial, an essential voice in the world of Spanish Baroque. The title of this exciting programme is Cuando la púrpura ríe.
Barneschi studied in Milan with Carlo De Martini. His busy career has included collaborations -aside from the above-mentioned Il Giardino Armonico-, with La Divina Armonía, led by Lorenzo Ghielmi and Il Barocchisti with Diego Fasolis. He has worked with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra under conductor Daniel Harding and the orchestra of the Teatro Carlo Felice of Genova, among other traditional symphonic orchestras. He also teaches, playing a Jacques Boquay violin dating to 1719. He has been concertmaster of the OBS on various occasions.
Soprano Nuria Rial (Manresa, 1975) began her musical education in Barcelona and completed it in Basel. A specialist in Renaissance and Baroque music, she also includes other genres in her repertoire and has a wide ranging and prizewinning discography. One of these is a recording of arias by Telemann with the Chamber Orchestra of Basel that was awarded the Opera Recording of the Year in 2012. Critics have celebrated her artistry as a lesson in exquisite, expressive and refined playing.
Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767), a contemporary of Bach and Handel, was perhaps eclipsed by these musical giants or did not enjoy the fame which he justly deserved. He is usually cited as being the most prolific composer in history -with more than 3000 works accredited or attributed to his name- the monumental catalogue and the beauty of these pieces combines with Telemann’s originality which distanced his music from the Baroque and made way for a more melodic and airy style.
For his part, Johann Bernhard Bach who studied in Weimar with his cousin Johann Sebastian. He was born in 1676 and died in 1749 and was a harpsichordist at the ducal court of Eisenach. Between 1708 and 1712 he worked with Telemann, who influenced his composition style. J. B. Bach is known, above all, for his four wonderful orchestral suites.
