University of Sevilla. Closing Concert Course 2018-2019

17 June, 2019

Conductor: Jordi Francés

A Manner of Dancing

The Spanish National Youth Orchestra (Joven Orquesta Nacional de España - JONDE), under Jordi Francés, closes the 2019-2019 academic year of the University of Seville in a concert with music from two of the most famous ballets ever: Tchaikovsky’s suite from The Sleeping Beauty and Stravinsky’s  The Rite of Spring. The latter’s radically vanguard nature changed the course of music forever when it premiered in Paris on May 29, 1913.

Jordi Francés, received his musical education in Holland and Switzerland and for years he combined the professions of percussionist and conductor. Having won numerous competitions, now he devotes all his time to conducting. Francés is very interested in contemporary creation and has worked with composers such as Birtwistle, Eötvös, Haas, Sánchez-Verdú or Camarero. This young conductor has already led the BBC Philharmonic, the Ensemble Intercontenporain and made his debut at the Teatro Real in Madrid with Brundibar by Krása.

La Joven Orquesta Nacional de España (JONDE) was created in 1983. It belongs to the Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música of the Ministry of Culture and it meets five times each year to develop and perfect the work of young musicians as they prepare for the professional world. The present Director of the orchestra is José Luis Turina.

The Sleeping Beauty was first seen in 1890. This was the second of Tchaikovsky’s ballets and he based his score on the Brothers Grimm version of The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods by the French fairy tale writer Perrault. The success of the ballet, with its choreography by Petipa, made this piece of wonderful melodies one of the top hits of the Russian composer. He was a particularly talented artist in composing a ballet on a grand scale and with enormous narrative possibilities.

“I imagined a scene of pagan rites where a virgin was chosen who would perform a sacrificial dance until she died”. This famous quotation by Stravinsky describes one of the most novel pieces of music ever composed with its enormous orchestral, diatonismo, modalism, rhythms and a return to paganism. The Rite of Spring was written for the Ballets Russes company, it introduced an entirely new concept to music and revolutionized the manner of composing a ballet score.
