Dancing the “saudade”

The Quorum Ballet, an acclaimed Portuguese contemporary repertoire dance company, comes to the Teatro de la Maestranza for the first time, with a show that projects one of the essential cultural motifs of this neighbouring country. The title says it all: Saudade/Back to Fado. It evokes that pain of absence, a characteristic of the Portuguese personality as expressed in its music of the fado. this work, for seven dancers, is inspired by the 16th century Portuguese poet Luís Vaz de Camões, one of the great Portuguese literary figures of all time. The production is simply beautiful, as the dancers perform on a stage of water. A quartet of musicians, with the Portuguese guitar predominating, are present along with singer, Joana Melo (Sandim, 1984), one of today’s most well-known figures of Portuguese song; the ensemble interacts with the dancers.

The Quorum Ballet is an enthusiastic young company, founded in 2005, with dancer and resident choreographer Daniel Cardosa as its Artistic Director. The ballet corps comes from: the Ballet Gulbenkian -what was originally Portugal’s national contemporary dance company- and the companies of the National Dance in Lisbon, Martha Graham in New York and the Peter Schaufuss Ballet in Denmark.  The Quorum has worked with guest choreographers Jonathan Hollander and Thaddeus Davis, among others.

In a very short time, and without any financial backing at the beginning, the Quorum has not only consolidated its reputation in Portugal as a front-running contemporary dance company, but has extended its name on tours to the United States, Denmark, Poland, Germany and another 20 countries across Europe, Asia and the Americas. International reviews have been excellent and in 2009, the Quorum won the category of Best Contemporary Dance Company in the first Portugal Dance Awards. In 2001, it was considered, ex-aequo, the best company on stage at the 14th edition of the Festival de Castilla y León (Spain). In its short 14 years, the company has staged  more than 61 spectacles in 700 shows.

Artistic Director Daniel Cardoso graduated from the National Conservatory in Lisbon and continued in New York where he danced with the Martha Graham Dance Company and was a guest soloist with various companies. He was Principal Dancer in the Danish Peter Schaufuss Ballet. He also teaches and has created a multitude of choreographies for international companies. Cardoso is currently a member of the General Council at the National Dance Company of Lisbon.
