Concha Buika, holy witch
“Concha Buika is a holy spirit, divine and witchlike. A mixture of innocence and sorcery. When you hear her voice, you hear Nina Simone, Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin. She concentrates the essence of all of them and has no fear. I give thanks to God for sending her to us.” The words of Carlos Santana, who has just recorded “Africa Speaks” with Concha Buika after her iconic concert in June in New York’s Central Park. Buika’s contribution is a highlight of this new work by the legendary guitarist, just the latest episode in what seems to be an unstoppable rise to the top.
Spanish with roots in Guinea, a star of the global musical fusion which mixes reggae, soul, blues, new flamenco and funk in a genuinely personal language, Concha Buika (Palma de Mallorca, 1972) is one of the most exciting, elegant and sensual singers on the international scene.
Her chameleon-like capacity to transform and adapt to any musical style earned her a Latin Grammy Latino in 2010, for her album “El último trago”, an homage to Chavela Vargas and Bebo Valdés, but it has also opened the doors of temples of music like the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid and Carnegie Hall in New York.
On her 2019 World Tour, surrounded by a multicultural all-woman band, Concha Buika -singer, composer and producer- in constantly creating bridges, dialogues and musical connections which cross any border.
This may seem like the achievement of an empathetic and transnational artist, but it’s simply the atmosphere of understanding and accessibility that always surrounds Concha Buika as she hits us with her most powerful artistic weapon: her passion, her artistic authenticity, her rare ability to shine as she sings, in the words of Pedro Almodóvar, “with her heart in pieces”.
If Carlos Santana, Anoushka Shankar, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Charles Aznavour, Niño Josele, Mariza, Bebo and Chucho Valdés, Luz Casal, José Luis Perales, and Armando Manzanero -and the list goes on- can’t resist the idea of working with her, who could?
Concha Buika is a total artist who, as well as singing, composing and producing music, also writes literature. The author of “A los que amaron a mujeres dificiles y acabaron por soltarse”, a book collecting her poems, stories and photographs, she is currently finishing a book of short stories which, like some of her songs, talk about the contradiction between power and the fragility of human lives.
