Fascinating surprises with the saxophone

The saxophone group Anexas, a very original type of group which has rapidly gained popularity, especially with younger audiences, appears in the Sala Manuel García, directed by Alfonso Romero Ramírez (Utrera, 1968). The programme is wide-ranging, it includes adaptations of Bach, Vaughan Williams and pieces by Romero Ramírez himself and by Javier Darias (1946), the winner of the National Prize for Music 2018.

Alfonso Romero Ramírez studied composition with Manuel Castillo in Seville, with Javier Darias in the OJA’s Manuel de Falla Composition Classroom, and in the Escuela de Composición y Creación Artística (School of Composition and Artistic Creation, ECCA). He studied saxophone and performed a significant number of concerts, both solo and through the Dúo Vigel. Also in charge of the Chorus, his work has been performed by the ROSS, the OJA and other national and international ensembles.

The saxophone, a relatively recent addition to the orchestra, was developed in the 1840s by the Belgian musician and inventor Adolphe Sax, an unusual character with an eventful life. His parents designed musical instruments, inventing the bass saxophone (nowadays baritone) while experimenting with a bass clarinet. His most successful invention, the saxophone, was presented to the public in 1844 in a performance of a piece by Hector Berlioz. “I have never heard anything so beautiful,” declared Rossini. Rachmaninov and Ravel added the instrument to their compositions, but it’s full potential would be in the world of jazz. Notwithstanding, there are many classical orchestral pieces  which include the saxophone by composers such as Berg, Bizet, Prokofiev, Bernstein, Britten, Debussy and Milhaud.

Brass ensembles in general, and saxophone groups in particular, are becoming more common among music students; and a sign of the interest in the instrument is evident in contemporary composers such as César Camarero. Last season, the Teatro de la Maestranza offered a concert by the saxophone quartet SQ4.
