Sara Baras takes off the disguise

One of the palos or types of flamenco most identified with the triumphal career of Sara Baras ( Cadiz, 1971) is the farruca, noted for a heel-stamping dance style and a profusion of off-beats and other rhythmic figures, requiring virtuoso musical skills. “It’s my favourite palo, very risky and very deep (…) With something you feel so deeply, you take off the disguise a little, and try to be flamenco at your core.” Sara Baras explains the essence of the intimacy and authenticity which drive the spirit of “Sombras”, her latest show, in which she invokes her mastery in this genre of masters, steering between light and shade, caresses and pain.

Sara Baras at the Teatro de la Maestranza presents “Sombras”, a show with 13 choreographed pieces connected by the glittering thread of farruca. In this work Sara, winner of the National Prize for Dance among other awards, celebrates 20 years since the creation of her Ballet Flamenco, in which she has performed over 4000 times, all over the world, to great acclaim. 

With “Sombras”, which Sara Baras has taken on tour to Miami, New York, Athens, Colombia, Italy, Poland, and more, the bailaora and choreographer suggests that there are no impossible goals when the paths we take are always changing.

Based on traditional flamenco and taking it a step beyond, with the help of Andrés Mérida (set design) and music by the guitarist Keko Baldomero in partnership with the violinist Ara Malikian, with her company’s corps de ballet and a team of seven musicians -two guitarists, two percussionists, two cantaores and alternating between a saxophone, flute and harmonica- Sara Baras offers an intense show, in which more than two hours “go by in an instant” according to the critics.

The critics also remark on the visual appeal of the production, which in the words of Sara Baras is possessed “by a beautiful energy”.
