The performance lasts about 60 minutes. There is no interval.

In 1887 a 6-year old boy called Pablo Ruiz Picasso was fascinated by the figure of Rosita del Oro, a bareback rider in Barcelona’s Tívoli Circus who opened his eyes to the magical world of the circus and its backstage mysteries; the everyday life of clowns and acrobats.

“Acrobat and Harlequin” with lyrical songs, live piano music, actors, puppets, shadows, objects and projections, conducted by a narrator who guides the scene and explains everything to the viewers. La Maquiné, one of the great theatre companies specialising in enthralling shows for children and young people, recreates the life of the wandering child Pablo, lost in the cold streets when a circus comes to town he fantasizes becoming part of the warm and cheerful family of acrobats. In other words, being a member of the “circus family”.

“Acrobat and Harlequin” is a fascinating visual spectacle which brings opera to delight and move new audiences. At the same time, it is an ambitious work of cultural recovery. Because celebrating the power of the circus, which inspired and excited Pablo Picasso, La Maquiné, under the direction of Joaquín Casanova, also revives the avant-garde music of Erik Satie (1866-1925) and Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) to create a production where song and acting share the stage with puppets, shadow play and projections.

The challenge is to break with stereotypes about opera, lyrical music and theatre, awakening curiosity and a love of the arts in children in an unconventional approach, with a work that pays close attention to detail in its visual appeal, set design, lighting and the quality of the audiovisual projections, revealing the diversity of the performing arts in a simple and evocative way.

Avant-garde and popular culture. Circus and commedia dell’arte. Picasso, Satie and Poulenc made accessible to children. A timeless story told in a contemporary language with a gentle message of discovery, learning and harmony between people and animals.

The story of the artistic apprenticeship and discovery of life of Pablo Ruiz Picasso. Years after that encounter with Rosita del Oro, when the child had grown up to be a painter, he found artists and bohemians in Paris who mingled with the characters of the travelling circuses on the boulevards, the classic circus figures, the characters of the commedia dell’arte and especially the Harlequin, who for years was Picasso’s alter ego, appearing in his paintings throughout his Rose Period.
