The Jussen brothers: young but seasoned musicians

They are brothers. They are young. They are media stars. And yet, they are two excellent pianists, celebrated with enthusiasm by international audiences and by the critics.

Lucas (1993) and Arthur Jussen (1996) are two Dutch brothers brought up in a musical household, with a flautist mother and a percussionist father. However, they chose piano. Joined by an extraordinary bond that enables them to sense “each other's most small, individual little bit of interpretation,” in the words of the astounded conductor Sir Neville Marriner, Lucas and Arthur Jussen may dress in a very modern style and replace the seats of an auditorium with pouffes. But when they sit at the keyboard, things are serious. They trained with Maria João Pires, Ricardo Castro and Lang Lang, and made their joint debut aged 10 and 13. Since 2010, they have been under exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon.

Virtuosos, high-impact, called “the classical pianists who get the millennials hooked”, Lucas and Arthur may have Queen and Diana Krall on their MP3 player, but they display a unique interconnectedness when they sit side by side or face to face in a musical duel to play Stravinsky or Mozart.

Alone or with orchestras like the Concertgebouw, Mariinski, Gulbenkian and many others at the top international level, the Jussen brothers, after six records with Deutsche Grammophon, have grown up. They are no longer children, and their new and more open approach to music includes the seriousness, even gravity, of deeply expressive, technically challenging programmes.

They come to the Teatro de la Maestranza with works straddling Classic and Romantic, finishing with the eternal avant-garde of Stravinsky. Mozart’s Sonata for 2 pianos K.V 448 (375a), a piece both gallant and profound, composed in Vienna in 1791; Schubert’s Fantasia in F minor for piano four-hands, a sparkling and very beautiful work composed in 1828, the year of his death; Mendelssohn’s Andante and Allegro Brillante, Op. 92, for piano four-hands, a virtuoso, sprightly and spirited work of 1841, and finally, Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” arranged for two pianos, an arrangement which before the days of the gramophone allowed a wider audience to hear the formidable orchestral work of a composer who, although he used a piano when composing, left little original work for the instrument. A stunning version.

W.A. Mozart, Sonata for two pianos in D major, K. 448F.
Schubert, Fantasia in F minor for piano four-hands D940F.
