Mayte Martín goes back to the source
Mayte Martín (Barcelona, 1965), one of the most sensitive, unique and demanding cantaoras of her generation, has brought back a meaning of the word “querencia”, which usually means fondness for someone or something: a homing instinct, the natural tendency to return to the source, your place of origin.
According to Mayte Martín, in honour of “those who infused their aesthetic and truth into flamenco”, in homage to “those whose mark and greatness made this art immortal”, the cantaora has devised a show connected by the thread of memory. That “sacred and blessed memory, that which you can no longer touch remains alive, that which embeds in the cells and tattoos onto the soul those experiences, words, gestures, moments and sounds that configure our being for ever.”
Accompanied on the guitar by Alejandro Hurtado (Alicante, 1994), a surprising tocaor with an unusually transparent, clean sound, which may stem from his double training in classical guitar; and by José Tomás (Ciudad Real, 1988), whose refined flamenco technique also comes from the Conservatory of Córdoba; on percussion David Domínguez and the violinist Marta Cardona. Plus the special collaboration of the bailaora Patricia Guerrero (Granada, 1990), one of the most exciting flamenco dancers currently breathing new life into the artform.
From a respect for the essence, activated by a desire to transmit, in this show Mayte Martín defends “that which survived and survives times and fashions, which goes beyond aesthetics and forms, remains floating in the air for centuries, and when you touch it, you feel that homing instinct.”
Her career is her guarantee: from her first steps, Mayte Martín broke the mould with a radically transgressive conception of flamenco, and she is now one of the most prestigious cantaoras. She has the guarantee of critical recognition, the collective approval of the aficionados, and an impressive list of awards. But her greatest recognition comes from the public, who appreciate her calm, detailed, subtle style.
