Carmina Burana, a bacchanal in dance

“Carmina Burana” by Carl Off, updated with a modern dance version, as a “bacchanal in dance”  includes a nod to hip-hop and stylises the movements of everyday life with passion and elegance, in what the press has called “an elegant and sophisticated orgy”, based on the famous secular 13th-century texts.

Nine musicians performing live, two choirs interacting on stage with the dancers and the audience, two pianists, three solo singers and a large corps de ballet, including Spanish and international classical and contemporary dancers, sweep us into a celebration of the profane, rejecting the rigidity and restriction of religion in an exaltation of lust, love, money and earthly pleasures.

The poems of Carmina Burana, a set of 228 secular texts satirising the Church, written mostly in Latin in 13th century Germany by goliards (wandering clerics with licentious habits) and students, were found in the Bavarian monastery of Benedikbeuren in 1803, and set to music by Carl Orff in the 1930s. This interpretation in dance by the Crea Dance Company is directed by María Rovira (Mataró, 1963), who studied contemporary dance in Paris, Essen and New York, and whose pioneering work in modern dance in Spain has won her several awards, including the National Prize for Dance in 1998.

In 1985 María Rovira founded Transit Danza, one of Spain’s first contemporary dance companies to become internationally famous, and she has worked with many prestigious companies, including the National Ballet of Cuba. In 2018 she choreographed the film “Yuli”, directed by Iciar Bollaín, on the life of the Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta.

Carmina Burana, a dazzling spectacle, energetic and direct in its excellent choreography and performance, invites us to celebrate life until it leads to an unexpected denouement…

Its first performance in late 2018 in Terrasa, featuring Keyvin Martínez, the Cuban dancer who worked with Rovira in the film adaptation of Carlos Acosta’s autobiography “Yuli”, was a resounding success. The critics highlighted the brilliance of the series of dance-offs between performers who challenge and provoke each other until they “feel the vibration of their bodice seeking meaning in every gesture, every line,” and the movements of the group “in which the power of the community shines out”, according to Valèria Gaillard.
