A surprising musical journey

The Sala Manuel García concludes its programme of unusual musical groups with percussion and piano, played by Carlos Moreno and Pepe Fernández, respectively.

Carlos Moreno trained in Seville’s Cristóbal de Morales Professional Conservatory. He studied composition for audiovisual media, and has created soundtracks for video games and Easter processional marches. He belongs to the Orquesta Conjunta del Conservatorio and has worked with the orchestra of the Barenboim-Said Akademie in its contemporary repertoire.

Pepe Fernández (Utrera, 1997) studied in Seville and won second prize in the “Julio García Casas” international competition. He has had successful recitals as a soloist and in chamber music, providing piano accompaniment for the Barenboim-Said Foundation and leading its Trio Sedhu, which won the fifth “José Gámez” chamber music competition. He has also worked with the Contemporary Music Ensemble of the Conservatorio Manuel Castillo.

Their programme is an extraordinary invitation to extend the repertoire and our musical curiosity with works by Delécluse, Creston, Sejourmée and Bozza.

In “Cinq Pieces Breves”, the composer Jacques Delécluse (1933-2015), professor of the Conservatoire de Paris, links 5 unrelated works, all very much in the style of the 1950s when percussion came to the fore, with a wide range of instruments: snare drum, metallophones, timpani, etc.

The American composer Paul Creston (1906-1985) contributes a Concertino for marimba and orchestra, arranged for piano, a 1940 piece conceived to highlight the virtuoso potential of the marimba as a solo instrument.

Emmanuel Sejourné (Limoges, 1961, an eclectic and active composer and brilliant percussionist, closely engaged in contemporary creation) also wrote for the marimba with a concerto for marimba and strings. This 2006 piece was acclaimed as a major work by the critics.

Finally, “Rhythmic” is an educational work composed in 1948 by Eugene Bozza (1905-1991), the French composer (strongly influenced by jazz), violinist, conductor of the Paris Opera Comique and Prix de Rome winner, who produced a large amount of chamber music.

The concert has been organised in partnership with

Jacques Delécluse, Cinq Pieces Breves
Paul Creston, Concertino for Marimba and Orchestra (Piano Reduction)
Emmanuel Sejournée, Concerto for Marimba and Strings Orchestra
Eugene Bozza, Rythmic
