The inexhaustible guitar of Pat Metheny
If any guitarist embodies the values of eclecticism, versatility, fusion, daring and brilliance in contemporary jazz, it’s Pat Metheny (Lee’s Summit, 1954). Winner of 20 Grammy awards, he was a child prodigy who began playing the trumpet at the age of 8, influenced by his brother Mike.
Member of an extended musical family, at 12 he began learning guitar. By 15, he was a professional. At 19, he was a teacher at the Berklee School in Boston, where amongst his students was Al Di Meola. Metheny, eclectic, virtuoso and a polyglot of infinite musical languages, has played with almost all the greats in every genre, from Jaco Pastorius to Ornette Coleman, from Sonny Rollins to David Bowie, from Steve Reich to Milton Nascimento.
Before his first recording session in 1974’s “Jaco” with Jaco Pastorius, he joined Gary Burton’s band, where Metheny developed his new way of playing on the classic foundation of swing, blues and traditional jazz. His ability to transform and adapt different genres have enabled him to win Grammys in 12 categories as diverse as instrumental rock and contemporary jazz.
His discography is stunning. His career is meteoric. His dedication to music is absolute: Pat Metheny plays 120 to 240 concerts a year… since 1974. His passion for innovation and investigation have made him a pioneer in the use of technology, and he has participated in the development of new types of guitar, including the bizarre “Pikasso”, with 42 strings and 3 necks. But at the same time Metheny is a consolidated, mysterious music, which has earned him honorary doctorates in American universities and which enables him to play in temples of Classical music like the Berliner Philharmoniker, on the same European tour which now brings him to Seville.
He returns to the Teatro de la Maestranza, where he offered a historic concert as part of a trio in 2011, and as always with Metheny he brings something new and surprising, different yet -like his eternal striped T-shirt- comfortingly familiar; one of those artists whose audience follows them faithfully over the years, secure in the knowledge that whatever they do, it will be a unique and exciting experience.
The Missouri native, who in 2018 received the highest honour in American jazz, the NEA Jazz Master, is a virtuoso whose technique serves what he considers the first commandment of a musician: “transmitting passion” in a universal form, beyond labels and genre.
He’s been doing it for 50 years, and he intends to keep doing it as long as he has the energy. “I have a radio station playing music in my head 24 hours a day. I don’t think I can turn it off.”
