A beacon for our ancient music

From early on, Carlos Mena (Vitoria, 1971) became one of the countertenors of reference on the European stage. The exquisite delicacy of his vocal line, the extraordinary way he delves into the music, making it all his own, transforms his concerts into a complete experience. Over the years, Mena has distilled his potential and, besides, has also turned to conducting. Today he is a singer at the zenith of his career.

The Capilla Santa María, created in 2009 at the instigation of the Fundación Santa María and directed by Carlos Mena, presents “La soledad del héroe” (The Solitude of the Hero), a programme of Spanish and Italian music of the 17th century which includes the recovery of unpublished works, and is staged by Lucía Astigarraga.

Carlos Mena received his training in the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (Switzerland) with important maestros such as the acclaimed countertenor and conductor René Jacobs. Besides contributing decisively to and reinforcing the excellent level of Spanish Ancient Music, Mena is involved not only in the recuperation of musical patrimony, but also in the diffusion of contemporary oeuvres.
