Dancing a new virtual world

Playful, joyful, poetic. Pixel, which premiered in 2014, brings the digital universe in which our lives have become submerged to the art of contemporary dance. The result is a fascinating mixture of hip-hop backed by vanguard digital projections, where the dancers display unbelievable, acrobatic compositions in the air, while the stage moves beneath their feet, or a grid of speckles fractures as in a gust of snow.

The Centre Chorégraphique National de Créteil et du Val-de-Marne / Compagnie Käfig, with the Artistic Direction and choreography of Mourad Merzouki –who had circus and martial arts training before starting to dance hip-hop at the age of 15– presents a piece that has been applauded in more than 30 countries. A work that examines the constant bombardment of images and puts them to the service of live art.

Constantly competing with images, living with an array of screens everywhere we look, Mourad Merzouki considers the emotion of fear and our suspicion that all too soon the difference between reality and the virtual world may no longer be distinguishable. He transforms this anxiety into a creative dance project, a show which launches us into the future. At a crossroads of many different disciplines, Pixel is a dialogue between dance and interactive video that opens new and common horizons in the scenic arts.
