The Voice of Grandfather Pepe

It has been seven years since Sanación, the first recording by María José Llergo, shook the Flamenco world. Both the critics and the audience were impressed by the young Andalusian woman, an artist fully engaged in the times and reality of the world she lives in, without losing sight of her origins. In that first project, one recognised the voice of her grandfather, Pepe Sánchez, the person who passed on his love for the Flamenco voice along with a respect for tradition. Since then, every new album, every song, every show conveys a connection with her roots. Yet this strong commitment with the past is never an obstacle for her creativity.

Ultrabelleza (2023) confirmed all the expectations. By then, María José Llergo had won a prestigious GOYA prize, and her public and enthusiastic defence of Andalusia had positioned her as one of the most relevant names of a new Flamenco sound. Genuine and luminous, her voice combines the Flamenco quejío with the genre of soul and just the right amount of electronics to express diversity and freedom in the present day. Grandfather Pepe departed this world in 2025. María José said her goodbyes by thanking him “for embroidering your voice in my throat “. María José Llergo takes her sonorous revolution to the stage. After the impact of Ultrabelleza, the artist from Córdoba returns to present El Juego Tour. A show designed to break down boundaries, to reconnect with one’s roots, and to celebrate artistic freedom in its purest form.
