Flamenco, that greek tragedy

A flamenco Ariadne? Yes, why not? Of this world and dreamy. Eternal and of every day. Rafaela Carrasco (Sevilla, 1972), one of the great guardians of flamenco dance, takes on the Greek tragedy and dances the myth of Ariadne. The story of the solitary woman who weaves the yarn and bids goodbye to Theseus from the island of Naxos, the place where she encountered love for a night.

Rafaela follows the structure of the great Greek tragedies and adds all the poetry of her flamenco, for a woman whose fine strand threads the centuries together on a journey of entangling labyrinths and traps of love and desire and struggles, all within a male environment.

Together with the poet and dramaturg Álvaro Tato, Rafaela Carrasco takes flamenco dance into the territory of myths in a show with tientos, tangos or seguiriyas, underlined by the penetrating voice of acclaimed Spanish actor Carmelo Gómez.

A Greek myth distilled with dance, guitar and cantaores (singers). No human passion escapes the myth. Not even flamenco.

The press says

Rafaela Carrasco, una fascinante 'Ariadna'

La obra, con textos de Alvaro Tato, rebosa de una cuidadísima estética, una enorme elegancia en la puesta en escena y un lenguaje coreográfico riquísimo.
