Competing Emotions

In the ring of life, we are prisoners of the great battle of emotions. 400 years ago, Claudio Monteverdi showed the world the power of lyrical theatre, he explored these to confront life and death, light and darkness, love and the tragedy of loss. In 2024, Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, will celebrate its premiere four centuries ago in Venice. Yet its modernity remains intact. Stage director Joan Anton Rechi proposes a boxing match where the characters are masked fighters in medieval dress; they wage the battle of life by singing the most beautiful madrigals.

A cutting edge stage production for a music that continues to sound contemporary, Combattimento, with the Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla (Baroque Orchestra of Seville) is led by Fausto Nardi and a team of four singers, specialists in Monteverdi. We recognise that the profound but conflicting emotions are always the same, whether they are past or present.
