The poignant story of the brutish puppeteer Zampanó and the sweet and innocent Gelsomina who go on the road together in a travelling circus along with the wonderful melodies of Nino Rota stole our hearts in La Strada. There was every possibility of the film becoming a ballet. And now it is.
The Ballet de Siena, a young but well-known ensemble in Italy, draws on La Strada as the inspiration for Fellini, La dolce vita di Federico, a choreography which pays tribute to the film director 100 years after his birth and to Nino Rota in the 40th anniversary since his death.
The magical characters of Amarcord, La dolce vita…parade across the stage to the delightful sound track of Nino Rota so that the fantastic world of Fellini, full of nostalgia and melancholy, fuses with the dreaminess of dance. Cinema is action. Dance is movement.
It was inevitable that the two would understand each other. Fellini has brought them together in a beautiful and touching spectacle.
