An Iconoclastic Genius for Mozart

Considered a sort of guru” leader of a collective of musicians who follow his radical view of music, the Greek Russian conductor Teodor Currentzis (Athens, 1972) is one of those exceptional cases of a musical visionary who divides the crowd between those who are fervent supporters and others who are furious detractors.

Either way, Currentzis, calls for superhuman technical technique in his musicians and conducts them with an obsessive reconsideration of music that explores every score in a new way. He has become an authentic musical beacon, known for his heterodoxy, overwhelming theatrical gestures and novel versions of the repertoire that are full of vitality, passion, character, and artistic dedication. This international conductor is now considered a charismatic icon, he shines with a truly unique identity that is exceptional. Notwithstanding, there are some critics who consider his reading of scores as capricious and debatable.

musicAeterna Orchestra, an ensemble of period instruments designed with his criteria and able to navigate from Rameau to Mahler, was founded by Currentizis in the Russian city of Novosibirsk. In 2011, when the conductor was appointed Director of the Perm (Urales) Opera and Ballet Theatre, the orchestra followed him to became part of the theatre troupe. company. The technical side of the orchestra -there are various Spanish musicians- is simply sumptuous and the ensemble has received multiple awards.

Currentzis recorded Mozart’s Requiem for Alpha in 2011 in a very beautiful and unbelievable interpretation. It will be performed in Sevilla with the full orchestra and choir of his musicAeterna. This composition is another of those pieces which, hauntingly, makes its way through the history of music as Mozart left it, uncompleted, -although it was finished by Süssmayr, following his instructions- with the composer’s death in 791.

One of the most appealing concerts of the season, an everlasting work, Mozart’s Requiem is to be seen and heard as never before by an iconoclastic genius. It cannot be missed.
