Breaking the Mould

This young man in a black sweatshirt and a 2-day stubble beard who breakdances in front of the Metropolitan Opera House façade is, above all, an excellent singer. Look for the video on internet where Jakub Józef Orliński (Warsaw, 1990) takes advantage of some free time between performances to show off a sequence of acrobatic steps on the street, demonstrating that his artistry goes further than making music.

Appearing on camera, one of the most extraordinary countertenors of the moment said that break dance demands of his body the same versatility as what has become the distinguishing feature of a career as a soloist that extends more than 10 years. The same characteristic defines the repertory of an inquisitive musician who does not settle for the standard repertoire and includes pieces on his recordings and in recitals by composers who have been forgotten for centuries.

Despite his evident high-profile figure, Jakub Józef Orliński refuses to be considered a product of marketing. The impact of his image is not an end in itself, although it can (and does) open doors to younger audiences. Behind the outward appearance is an artist who is making history. A spectacular voice and technique with the astonishing gift to touch, stir and awaken emotions which, to be certain, are timeless. Don’t be limited by first impressions. You have already seen how he dances. Now listen to him sing.
