The prodigious guitar

Since the age of 12, Rafael Riqueni has amazed audiences with the unique energy of his guitar. It has been 40 years since his first recording, Juego de niños, (Child’s play) which astonished listeners for the audacity of its musical ideas: a richness of concept and sound that went much further than traditional flamenco, and an outstanding composition style from this devoted heir of the great guitarist Niño Ricardo. Nerja, the new álbum which Riqueni brings to the Maestranza has been in updating mode since 2022 when it was released. It tells the story of the young people who discovered the caves in the profound depths of Nerja (close to Malaga) in 1954. With this story, the artist makes use of an unrestrained style that is entirely his. It is harmonically related with Impressionism and has an enveloping quality that continues to enchant audiences around the world.

This Sevillian in love with his land, turns home surrounded by good friends: flamenco artists like cantaor (singer) Israel Fernández or bailaora (dancer) María Moreno, with whom he feels especially at ease on stage, and who contribute to developing a distinctive musical universe. Long may it continue.
