Words become Music

Opera’s reaction to biased or misinformed opinions is to insist on demonstrating the genre as valid; or at the very least, an extraordinary interest to adapt to new formats and languages. In a creative career that is bold and not the least conventional, the composer Reyes Oteo has devoted special attention to the relationship between music and words, to language as a generative element. La clausura del amor explores the possibilities of declamation and rhythm; the tension that lives within words explodes as a source of dramatic conflict.

In the origin of this chamber opera there is the exchange of words (because this piece is not strictly speaking about a dialogue) which the French dramatist Pascal Rambert puts in the mouths of two characters who are doomed to the inevitable breakup of a relationship. Reyes Oteo backs the emotional intensity of the confrontation by uniting the voices with a small instrumental ensemble to produce musical textures that amplify the intimate mishaps of the characters and gives continuity to the drama. This creation is very challenging for its interpreters and an enormous impact on the audience: the proof that today, just as yesterday, opera speaks about our most profound emotions.
