A Living Legend of Six Strings

For the last eleven summers, don José Fernández Torres “Tomatito” has gone into the University of Almería with his guitar to give a Master class. For three days, the prestigious “Sonanta” examines different aspects of flamenco technique such as repaso de falsetas or accompaniment to flamenco song and solo guitar. There are limited places and enormous expectation. In front of the maestro are young students who, in many cases, return year after year. Beside him is his son, “José del Tomate”. Who would have said to his predecessors of the Pescadería neighbourhood in Almería that flamenco guitar would one day be a discipline taught in such academic surroundings! Tomatito has a lot do with this public and noteworthy recognition.

After his emotive tribute to Paco de Lucía in 2024, perhaps his most important mentor, Tomatito returns to the Teatro de la Maestranza. With him, past, present and future of flamenco, a tribute to the legacy received and his drive to advance the art to which he has dedicated his whole life. A natural, organic progression, without deception or artifice, an art which evolves over time and is presented in a new light with every appearance on stage. Tomatito, a living legend, invites his audience to share a new adventure.
