A Diabolical Trap

Whether he exists or not, the devil does not want to be alone. For that reason, he is constantly in search of new friends. It is possible he visited composer Igor Stravinsky various times during his life as they both got to know each other well in the end. Of the many stories the devil told the musician, perhaps the best one is about the soldier called Joseph returning home from the war. At a riverbank he exchanges his violin for a book which, among its other magical powers, predicts the future. Since the devil always wins, Joseph becomes rich but never achieves happiness.

It does not take much to tell this story with a moral: the verses of Swiss poet Ramuz, three actors, and besides the violin of the soldier, six other instruments. No grand orchestra as in The Firebird or The Rite of Spring. Stravinsky had to make do with what he had at hand. The work was composed during the difficult times of the deadly epidemic of the Spanish flu. More than a century after its premiere, the story of the soldier who sold his soul continues to entertain and unsettle audiences. The devil knows why.
