Opera and Earthy Spirit
To transform a classical text into an opera is a challenge, and on occasions, the precursor to failure for any composer. To take on Bodas de sangre, Manuel Busto had to dig deep in this iconic play of Federico García Lorca, and at the same time, in the poetic universe which is recreated here. Experienced in very diverse artistic spheres, Busto has dared to push the genre closer to the substratum from which the original work emerged: popular Andalusian culture and what is perhaps its highest expression: flamenco.
A stage production by the Teatro de la Maestranza in collaboration with the Teatro Real of Madrid, Bodas de sangre inaugurates a new time and signals new directions in opera, incorporating flamenco song and dance into the large orchestra and opera voices. This is not an adornment in the least; these are genuine forms of expression which contribute a new dimension to the dramas of Lorca. Conductor Lucas Macías and Stage Director Bárbara Lluch lead this premiere which includes a cast headed by young singers and Maria Terremoto as the Mother. An experience of “Lírica jondura” awaits Sevilla.
