Imagery in Motion
Behind Afanador two deeply compelling interests pulsate. In the first instance, that of photographer Ruven Afanador for Andalusia and the world of flamenco. Deriving from this, that of choreographer Marcos Morau when he saw the photographs of this Columbian artist after his sessions with artists like Eva Yerbabuena, José Antonio or the ballet director Rubén Olmo. These pictures were exhibited during the Bienal del Flamenco in 2012 and are part of his books Ángel Gitano: The Men of Flamenco and Mil Bess/ One Thousand Kisses. Morau allowed his first impressions to mature before settling on a choreographic and photographic composition of beauty. In his own words, he assumed “the carnal duel which is, in both of these, captures life”.
The National Ballet of Spain returns to the Teatro de la Maestranza and the stage of the world premiere of Afanador in December 2023, one of the greatest successes on the dance scene in recent seasons. A work of visual impact and exceptional aesthetic that has triumphed with audiences all around the world.
A contemporary vision of the universe of flamenco coated with the surrealist imprint of the photographer, in a coexistence of (to quote Morau again) “dreams, desires and memories”. The glorious odyssey of Afanador finalizes in Seville.
