Forbidden love and the battle for power
Love and conflict between rival clans. Drama and social conflict. Forbidden love and a battle for power. Is I capuleti e i Montecchi, (The Capulets and the Montagues), by Vicenzo Bellini, limited to the tragic love story between Romeo and Juliet? Or, is it also a portrait of the power struggle between two factions in medieval Italy: the Guelphs -Capulets- and the Ghibellines- Montagues, symbols of social discord at any given time in any country?
Beside Luis Cansino (Capellio) is Leonor Bonilla (Giuletta), the acclaimed soprano and rising star from Sevilla, for one of Bellini’s most stirring and lyrical operas which marked the triumph of Bel canto and the beginning of musical Romanticism.
